US Justice Department Joins Legal Challenge to Stop California's Congressional Map
Federal authorities have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
