Coaching a Baby to Become an 'British Gentleman' – Is It Worth the Cost?

Child education concept
The firm responsible for the advertisement explains that what looks like "luxury or oddity" is in fact "intentional commitment in early-stage education".

"Parents residing in North London seeks an exceptional and qualified tutor to assist their most junior child on his first steps to growing into an British gentleman."

When reading this advertisement, you might naturally miss the term "beginning" as just figurative language.

But, it might be the most important element of this unusual job advert, as it attempts to hire a tutor for a infant.

Many of applications have already been received since the anonymous family advertised their search for the highly paid tutor, who must be "someone very special".

Over the last few weeks, the post has received attention in the press, with many wondering why?

Forward-Thinking Method

A tutoring expert, CEO and founder of Tutors International, which is assisting the family in their search, explained that despite initial skepticism, he found the idea "visionary", and "advanced".

When he consulted the family, he said they understood the atypical nature of their requirement, and how immature their son is.

But, they clarified that they "were unwilling to delay any longer" to get a tutor, as they had postponed until their elder sibling was five, and by that age "cultural conditioning had by then set in".

But what did the family mean by "cultural bias"?

It's "everything", he responded. "The way you eat, the manner you speak".

He explained the firstborn had absorbed "very nuanced, body language" from the family, and had adopted their cultural ways. The family told the consultant they wished to avoid history to repeat itself with their younger child.

The intention: To engage a UK tutor, who must speak with RP, to guide the baby from day one.

Tutoring discussion
The tutoring agency state the post has sparked a broader debate about how parents perceive education, privilege and the function of home and culture in learning.

Osmotic Learning

"A great deal of the education at the start here is kind of absorbed naturally," stated the CEO.

It's by means of this subtle influence that the family are aiming the child will acquire the English characteristics they aim to cultivate.

The consultant noted the tutor had to be somebody who studied at "prestigious academies – similar types of schools as the family hope to send their son to".

"The instructor must be the appropriate candidate, they'll be doing things they don't even know they're doing, effortlessly," he said.

Cost Not Relevant

The family told Adam the selected educator should preferably also have knowledge of or interest in horse riding, skiing, the arts and musical activities so as to influence the child in a wide range of hobbies.

Additionally though, he explained the family desired the tutor to sign up the child on a range of lessons so the child would be "equestrian training and learning an tool by the time they are about three years old".

In the family's perspective, guiding their son become a "British gentleman" will lead to achievement and provide access.

"For all the advantages and disadvantages of that, because it's certainly a social class indicator," he notes.

Yet, despite all this guidance in "UK identity", might the child adopt alleged cultural influence from the international family he lives with anyway?

"Certainly", said he. "The family understand this might not succeed, but they've simply adopted the perspective of, 'why not attempt it and we'll proceed as quickly as we can', because the price of it is not relevant," he said.

Impractical

Several in the tutoring industry who express these reservations.

An education leader, chief executive of an educational organization, who provides individual instructors, commented that "the process of becoming bicultural, or in fact, discovering oneself, is something that must be grown into, not designed."

Peter wrote that he had emigrated from China to the UK at the time of 7 years old, and had been educated understanding and embodying two backgrounds. He went on to learn at Cambridge University.

The educator was the pioneer born in mainland China to be selected to the position of Finance Head of the Cambridge Union.

"The idea that an individual can function as a embodiment of UK identity, someone who can possibly transfer the characteristics of a UK sophisticate upon a one-year-old child, seems to me optimistic and unrealistic," he commented.

"From my perspective, employing a quintessentially English tutor from early childhood will does not automatically produce the goal they hope for.

"I never had such a figure, and however I have been privileged enough to enjoy numerous of the situations they aspire for their son."

He continued: "The reality is, cultural identity should not be forced from the outside; it must be chosen, and it must be internally driven."

Purchasing UK Culture

Naturally, UK identity is something Adam thinks can be instructed – and marketed.

"I believe the fact that the world views us in this light is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
